I feel India’s victory at Perth is one of the memorable moments in the world of sports in 2008.

Excerpts from a news item published in Indian Express:

INDIA BEAT AUSTRALIA, CREATE HISTORY AT PERTH

Perth, January 19: India recorded one of their most amazing Test triumphs overseas, when they beat Australia by 72 runs in the thrilling third cricket Test to snap the champion team’s record 16-match winning streak on Saturday.

Set 413 to win a world record 17th Test in succession, the Australians were dismissed for 340 to allow the spirited visitors to reduce the margin to 2-1 in the four match series with one full day to spare.

Not many had given the Indians any hope at the WACA, regarded as the fastest pitch in the world, but Anil Kumble and his men came out firing on all cylinders to not only pull off a sensational victory but raise hopes of levelling the series.

The Indians celebrated wildly and hugged each other after R P Singh castled last man Shaun Tait, bringing an end to a dramatic Test which saw fortune fluctuating from one team to the other on the four days.

It was a remarkable show of character by the Indians who did not allow the acrimonious events of the Sydney Test to affect them as they went about plotting the demolition of the champion team.

Moreover, the Indians have gone on since to prove that this victory wasn’t just a one-off piece of luck.

The Indian side of today is the most elegant and stylish I have ever seen. It’s a pleasure to watch their artists at work.

VISWANATHAN ANAND crowned WORLD CHESS CHAMPION for the third time.

(Excerpts from a news item published in The Hindu, Oct.30,2008)

Viswanathan Anand has kept his tryst with history here on Wednesday. The much-needed draw against challenger Vladimir Kramnik in the eleventh game gave Anand a historic win (6.5-4.5) with white pieces in the most-widely followed World chess title match.

Anand, winner of all the major titles in the game at least once in his illustrious international career spanning 25 years, now holds what appears to be an unbeatable record of having claimed the World title in three different formats.

SILENCING THE CRITICS

He has silenced all those who doubted his ability to emerge stronger in matchplay. Anand could not have proved his point against a better player than Kramnik. Until Wednesday, Kramnik was unbeaten in World title matchplays since attaining greatness by beating Garry Kasparov by a two-point margin in2000.

SOUTH AFRICA WIN SERIES IN AUSTRALIA

”AUSTRALIAN CRICKET DEAD AND BURIED”

Melbourne, Dec 31 (PTI) ”Australian cricket dead and buried”.

The headline in the ”The Daily Telegraph” perfectly summed up the mood as Australia plunged into depression following the cricket team’s first home series defeat in 16 years and chief selector Andrew Hilditch finds himself at the receiving end of the media wrath after the debacle against South Africa.

”The echo of the ball flying off the confident bat of South Africa’s Hashim Amla yesterday was the death rattle of Australia’s record 16 years without a series loss at home.

”Analysts investigating Australia’s dramatic Test cricket demise say there are no suspicious circumstances,” the writer said.

The daily also ran a mock obituary of Australian cricket which read ”R.I.P. Australian cricket slaughtered by South Africa December 30 at the MCG. Aided and abetted by: Incompetent selectors, Inept batting, Impotent Bowling Dreadful Catching, Poor Captaincy.” Explaining what ails Australian cricket, the writer said, ”It simply followed a short illness complicated by player arrogance, chronic selection short-sightedness, poor captaincy decisions, unreliable batting, indecisive bowling and fielding clumsiness.

”Any obituary will say the few spasms of competitiveness Australia mustered in both Tests were brutally amputated by a cohesive South Africa, who recorded their first series victory in Australia,” he said. PTI
