Targetted advertising...That claim is utter rubbish. Google uses targetted advertising by page content, Facebook just uses your location to place ads. It’s not a direct way of gathering information. It’s just helping to bring the right ads to the right place. If they were selling the information, well that’s another story, but they are not.
External Applications...When you add each one, you are given the disclaimer that the publisher has to access your information and you have the choice to use it or not. It’s based on the user’s choice to accept or reject.
There is however a flip side because when you register, by default, your networks you join have access to your page for viewing pleasure. If you didn’t realise this, you would be giving away all your info. Also when you switch networks, your settings are forced so the new network can see your profile till you change it back. I realised this when i joined my college network and realised all school members could see my profile without being my friend. That’s my only concern at the moment.
In the end, people want their friends to see their pictures, videos and what not..so it’s not really a big deal...
